Las últimas declaraciones de Carmen Vela, Secretaria de Estado de Investigación y responsable última de las políticas de investigación española, en la revista Nature son un intento desesperado y fallido de “hacer de la necesidad virtud”, apoyándose en unos datos inexactos con el fin de justificar la política de recortes a la investigación que el actual gobierno de España está llevando a cabo de forma insensata y temeraria. http://www.sciencemag.org/content/336/6078/139.short
A continuación transcribimos por su interés la respuesta del investigador Alberto Sicilia, de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, desde su blog de ciencia Principia Marsupia

Estimada Sra. Carmen Vela,
Esta mañana, usted ha publicado una columna de opinión en la prestigiosa revista Nature donde explica su visión de futuro para la investigación nuestro país.
España está muy lejos de los países líderes en I+D. Gran parte de la culpa, la tenemos los científicos españoles. Pero su artículo en Nature es un insulto a la inteligencia de quienes trabajamos como investigadores en España. Permítame demostrar, con datos, que escribiendo esa columna usted ha hecho un ridículo internacional.
Usted dice: “Nuestro gobierno ha sido forzado a optimizar sus limitados recursos”.
Datos. El recorte presupuestario para I+D ha sido del 22.5%, mientras el recorte medio de la Administración central ha sido del 16.9%. Usted ha hecho el ridículo.
Usted dice: “Debemos de dejar de hablar de la importancia de la Ciencia y, en su lugar, comprometernos con la excelencia”.
Datos. Inversión en I+D en los países “excelentes”: EEUU, 2.7% de su PIB y Alemania, 2.3%. España gasta un 1.2%. Usted ha hecho el ridículo.
Usted dice: “[España] tiene que reducir el número de científicos”.
Datos. Reino Unido: 4260 científicos por millón de habitantes. Alemania: 3530. Francia: 3490. España: 2930. Usted ha hecho el ridículo.
Usted dice: “Animo a los investigadores españoles a demostrar su excelencia compitiendo internacionalmente con los mejores en Europa”.
Sra. Secretaria de Estado, su artículo ha demostrado que usted sí que sabe competir con los mejores de Europa: ha hecho un ridículo de nivel internacional.

The latest opinions of Carmen Vela, Spanish Secretary of State for Research and main responsible for the policies of Spanish research, made to the scientific journal Nature, are a desperate and failed attempt to "make a virtue of necessity", and are based on inaccurate data in order to justify the policy of Research cuts, that the government of Spain is carrying out in a senseless and reckless way.

Dear Mrs. Carmen Vela,
This morning, you have published an opinion column published in the journal Nature explaining your vision for research in our country. Spain is far from the leading countries in R & D. Much of the blame, we have the Spanish scientists. But your article in Nature is an insult to the intelligence of those who work as researchers in Spain.
Let me demonstrate with data, that writing this column you have made a fool of yourself internationally.
You say: "Our government has been forced to optimize their limited resources."
Data.Cuts for R&D were 22.5%, while cuts in central government have been 16.9%. You've made a fool of yourself.
You say: "We must stop talking about the importance of science and, instead, commit to excellence." Data. Investment in R&D in 'excellent' countries: U.S., 2.7% of GDP and Germany, 2.3%. Spain spends 1.2%. You've made a fool of yourself.
You say: "Spain must reduce the number of scientists." Data. United Kingdom: 4260 scientists per million inhabitants. Germany: 3530. France: 3490. Spain: 2930. You've made a fool of yourself.
You say: "I encourage Spanish researchers to demonstrate their excellence competing internationally with the best in Europe." Madame Secretary of State, your article has shown that you really know how to compete with the best of Europe: you have made a fool of yourself at an international standard.
